In this workshop, Girl Scouts explore the connection between humans and animals through engaging activities and games. Our program fulfills many requirements for the Girl Scout Animal Helpers badge.
Cadettes will learn how horses fit into the role of Animal Helpers through listening to trainers, life coaches, counselors, and riding instructors. Then, Cadettes will participate in a mini experiential learning session with equine assisted activities and ride or drive a horse to experience therapeutic riding or driving. Our homeschooling programs are organically taught. We do not use books or worksheets, and all of our lessons come from conversation and experiential learning through hands-on interactions with horses, chickens, and garden plants.
Our programs combine physical movement and fitness through walking, leading and grooming horses, optional riding or cart driving, stretching and physical games as well as leading and grooming horses. Students are introduced to math, science, biology, nutrition and health concepts as those topics apply to daily farm life. Art projects are provided by a professional artist as a fun way to tap into kids' creativeness. History of farming, horses, and our local area is shared with students and can be a "jumping point" for students to research these topics further on their own. Agricultural professionals visit throughout our semester programming to share their experiences in different careers including rescue organizations, farriers and blacksmiths, beekeepers, veterinarians, vegetable farmers, and horse trainers.
Last but not least, through their interaction with fellow students and their equine partners, youth will also practice positive life-skills including confidence, self-advocating, recognizing and setting boundaries, building healthy relationships, positive communication, leadership and teamwork, better awareness and focus, patience, emotional regulation, and kindness and empathy.
Activities your children can expect include (based on seasons and age group): feeding, grooming, haltering, leading, tacking, and riding or driving horses, extracting honey from frames (frames are collected beforehand and bee-free), planting vegetables and harvesting when mature, playing games, and collecting eggs, making maple syrup and apple butter.
